UNHCR registers more than 13,600 refugees from 48 countries of origin, who are hosted by Indonesia. Many of the refugees in Indonesia have skills and resources that can also be part of the solution to the COVID-19 pandemic. In Medan, there are nearly 2,000 refugees and some of the refugee women, supported by UNHCR’s partner, Mapanbumi, produced washable face masks that are distributed for free to vulnerable Indonesians and those who continue to work outside their homes in order to support themselves and their families. The refugee women produced 1,000 masks and distributed the masks to hundreds of becak drivers, street cleaners and the elderly in 18 sub-districts in Medan.
